Trail Improvement

Status: Ongoing

About the Project

Parkwood East's trails connect our parks and neighborhood. Keeping them healthy and accessible requires ongoing care. Our volunteers and groundkeeper have been working throughout the community to reclaim overgrown areas, clear accumulated debris and improve trail conditions. This work ranges from routine trail stewardship to habitat restoration and even addressing aging sections of trail which have become difficult to navigate.

What We're Working On

Throughout the community, our trail improvement efforts include clearing fallen limbs and debris, removing invasive plants, cutting back overgrown vegetation, and restoring recently cleared areas with mulch or new plantings. We're also evaluating more substantial improvements where aging infrastructure has become a concern.

Buckeye - Conifer Trail Improvements

Several asphalt trails extending from Hickory Place Park have deteriorated significantly as surrounding tree roots have lifted and broken the pavement. The resulting cracks and uneven surfaces have created tripping hazards for pedestrians. These trails are particularly important because they're regularly used by children and families walking through the neighborhood on their way to and from the nearby elementary school.

We've solicited a contractor bid to remove the damaged asphalt and grade the affected areas. Rather than replacing the pavement, however, our long term plan is to transition these sections to gravel trails. This will provide a surface that can be more easily maintained as the surrounding landscape continues to grow and change.

Where We Are Now

Significant debris and invasive vegetation have already been removed from several areas throughout Parkwood East, reopening portions of the trail system that had become heavily overgrown. Our attention is now turning toward mulching, replanting and maintaining the areas we've reclaimed.

Planning is also underway for the Buckeye - Conifer trail improvements, beginning with contractor pricing for removal of the deteriorated asphalt.

Next Step: Continue restoration of recently cleared areas, evaluate the Hickory Place trail bid, and identify additional priority sections of trail for improvement.
