Trail Improvement: Gravel Edition

Another Weekend, Another Neighborhood Improvement!

If you've taken a stroll along Cottonwood Trail recently, you may have noticed something a little different. The trail has a whole new look! Our volunteers have been hard at work in the Cottonwood Trail area working on the removal of unwanted vegetation, applying mulch and preparing the surrounding landscape for future restoration.

This weekend, however, our attention turned to the walking path itself.

With a little elbow grease and plenty of determination, volunteers worked to create a more even refreshed trail surface for neighbors to enjoy. Our trio spent the weekend scraping away uneven material, leveling the surface, and finished things off with a fresh layer of crunchy gravel.

Built With a Little Neighborhood Elbow Grease

What started as a simple weekend project turned into something a little more special than we anticipated. As our volunteers worked along Cottonwood Trail our neighbors stopped to chat, ask questions, and offer words of encouragement. Some thanked us for the improvements happening throughout the community, including work that often takes place quietly behind the scenes.

Others went a step further.

After a quick invitation was shared in our neighborhood Facebook group, our volunteer group grew as three teenage volunteers joined the work party to lend their time and energy to the project. We also had the pleasure of meeting a new neighbor who stopped to learn more about what we were doing. And just when we were getting ready to tackle the last of the gravel, another homeowner offered to lend a hand—with a gas-powered power wagon, no less! Talk about showing up with the right tool for the job!

But perhaps the best part of the weekend wasn't the freshly graded trail or the satisfying crunch of new gravel underfoot. It was the reminder that community involvement doesn't always begin with a scheduled event or a formal invitation. Sometimes it starts with a friendly conversation, a few encouraging words, or simply noticing that something good is happening and deciding to be part of it. And so what began as a small weekend improvement became a wonderful example of neighbors coming together.

To everyone who stopped to chat, offered encouragement, shared their time, or helped move that last stubborn pile of gravel: Thank you! You helped make this project about more than just improving a trail. You reminded us what makes Parkwood East a community.

What's Next?

We're not quite finished! Our work will continue on Valley Oak as weather and volunteer availability permit. We're also developing plans to introduce new plantings to the surrounding area in Spring 2027.

So next time you're out for a walk, take a little detour along Cottonwood Trail and enjoy that freshly graveled path.
